Letter to Sawyer 9/22/19

Hey Sawyer-

Two important events this week are the birthdays of Grandma Halverson(9/20) and Nana (9/23).

We had an amazing Relief Society lesson today.  We were talking about times when the Lord has ministered to us as well as how to minister to children who "want to be lost" or aren't interested in the gospel.  When the lesson ended and it was about time to leave, one of the sisters said, "I need to share something."  Through tears she shared that when she was 19 she left the church and didn't return until 25.  She said she went back to church and one of her bishops felt impressed she should serve a mission.  She said no.  A few months later she went back and there was a new bishop.  He told her he felt impressed she should serve a mission.  She went home from church that day and told her parents she was serving a mission.  She left on her mission when she was 26 and returned when she was 28.  She served in San Diego.  Her point was, God knows your children and He will not abandon them.  Even when you feel you've failed as a parent or haven't done enough or don't know what to do, He does and He will.  It was very tender.  Not a dry eye.  I really love the ladies in our ward.

After church, the bishopric put on an awesome linger longer.  Brother Hicks made homemade ice cream and it was a huge hit.  The men were in charge and did such a great job.  I thought it went across brilliantly and was relatively simple.  We polished off 8 gallons of ice cream.  They figured we served 230 cups of ice cream.  I think there is a good vibe in the ward.

Ruby had a soccer game on Saturday evening that dad and I enjoyed going to.  When the game started our team only had 6 players and the goalie.  Our entire mid line was gone.  A few minutes into the game, two other players showed up but none of our girls got to sub the entire game.  Ruby was a trooper and made two good passes that almost resulted in goals.  But, sadly the score was 9-0.  The other team killed us.  Ruby let us know the whole way home how aggressive the other team was and that they were trying to hurt them.  We assured her that getting kicked and pushed is just part of the game. Dad and I got take out from Chapala's and Ruby was thrilled with McDonald's (which happened to be the slowest drive through line we've ever experienced). :)

Saturday afternoon, Dad, Ruby, and I went to a stone place in Missouri to pick out stone for the house.  Still not sure exactly what we want the outside to look like, but hopefully it will come together.  I almost just want Dad to make all these decisions.  He has good taste and I don't have super strong opinions about the outside.  I could be happy with a lot of things.

Saturday morning, Dad went and played squash and I worked on (drumroll) Charlie's 11th grade year for his book.  I am SO excited to almost be done with it.  These books are so important to me to finish, but they take SO much time and mental energy that it will be nice to have it completed.

Charlie and a group of friends went camping Friday night.  It was supposed to rain but stayed dry and they all slept in hammocks.  On the way home, the suburban got a major flat tire so he had to figure out how to find the spare and tools and change it in the rain. Some nice guy stopped with a power drill and helped get the lug nuts off.

Friday night, we had perfect weather for Pickleball and it was fun to play as couples again.  My sprained toe is finally healed.

Friday morning, I went to the temple with Liz Dunn and completed the endowment for a name Charlie found a year and a half ago.

Lucy told dad this week that she is finally feeling happy about being in the new ward.  I'm so glad.

Thursday morning, my normal walking friends were out of town so I asked Michelle Stitt if she wanted to walk and it was nice getting to know her better.

Wednesday, we took the Activity Day girls on a nature walk to hide the kindness rocks we had painted the week before.  We have 11 girls come each time.  Many are from part member families so it's been nice to have them participate.
